AAMPTU (Alberta Association of Motion Picture and Television Unions) is the collaboration of unions and guilds representing screen-based industries in Alberta. While other industry associations focus on the industry as a whole, we focus on our memberships and issues that directly affect them.

Having formalized in 2007, we have been working together informally for many years to promote work opportunities in Alberta in conjunction with the Film Commissions, and to ensure equitable compensation and consistent working conditions for all of our members. We discuss requests from producers regarding variances to our collective agreements and speak with a common voice on those matters.

Most recently, we have been discussing the issue of labour shortage in Alberta and how it has affected our industry. It is very difficult for the unions and production budgets to keep up with the high wages created by short supply and high demand. One of the first questions that producers from out of province ask any of us before making a decision about whether to consider Alberta as a location is whether we have enough professional, qualified people to crew a show.

All of the unions encourage our members to get involved in all aspects of film production; not only will it help you understand the process more fully but more importantly it can help to pay the bills between gigs. If you are interested in working as a crew member, please contact your local IATSE office for information about equipment and/ or courses that you may need. In Calgary, you can visit www.iatse212.com and in Edmonton you can visit www.iatse210.com.

The current AAMPTU Chairperson is Damian Petti (President, IATSE 212), who is also serving as the Alberta Film Advisory Committee Co-Chair.
