What has been your favorite role?
One of my favourite film roles was playing Miss Petersen (a teacher) in Ginger Beef, written and directed by Eunice Hau. I had a scene with Andrew Phung, and, since we shot in a school, I got to rustle up some old school memories!
What do you do when you are not performing?
When I am not performing, one of the things I love doing the most is writing. I am a playwright and screenwriter, and will be producing and directing my first short film- My Big Fat Gay Wedding – this summer! If you’re a lover of comedy and filming shawarma food fights, keep your eyes open for the casting call coming out soon.
What organization / activity are you involved with or passionate about that people would find interesting?
I work in the non-profit world, specifically with organizations that focus on sexuality and harm reduction. I currently am a Girls Program Facilitator at the Centre for Sexuality, so I work with groups of young girls to explore puberty, media, body image, and friendships. It’s so important right now that young people are given space to learn and explore their own identities and values in an affirming, non-judgemental space. The Centre also has WiseGuyz and the Boys Program, which works with young boys and guys; Relationship and Sexual Health Educators for schools and communities; Camp fYrefly, which is a 2SLGBTQIA+ leadership camp; workshops and supports for businesses and other organizations through our Training Centre; free STI testing and counselling services; and so much more!
What Director would you like to work with?
I would love to get to work with Sarah Polley and Denis Villeneuve (go fantastic Canadian filmmakers!), but gotta include Yorgos Lanthimos, Greta Gerwig, and if Phoebe Waller-Bridge ever directs something she writes.
What is your favorite movie and/or TV show?
I cannot pick, so here’s a fast and incomplete list: Severance, Arrival, Foundation, Sort of, Bridesmaids, Women Talking, Killing Eve (early seasons), Fleabag, Please Like Me, The Great, Glow.
As a Performer, what is one thing you wish you would have known sooner?
It’s okay to decline auditions. While I wouldn’t recommend doing it regularly, I think it’s crucial to understand that we have lives beyond being performers and cannot always just turn it upside down for a job. I love performing, but I also have boundaries and want to be able to commit wholeheartedly to what matters to me. And, sometimes, that does mean turning everything I had planned upside down for projects that are worth, and other times, it doesn’t.
