What has been your favorite role?
My best roles came when I was beginning my career. A supporting role (as Ruth) in McCabe and Mrs. Miller, now considered a classic film, was a magical experience, ten weeks on set as part of the Robert Altman directed cast. Philippa Wormser, the pregnant neighbour in Pioneer Woman (1972) was a much smaller role, but the praise I received for my small part, only two scenes, meant the world to me. Playing Louise in the Fil Fraser production of Marie-Anne was a landmark for me, even though I was ill at the time.
What do you do when you are not performing?
I am now primarily a writer, having authored four published books, one of which, Rebel Women: Achievements Beyond the Ordinary, is a Canadian bestseller (still selling after twenty years!) Deadly Dues, my first mystery novel, is set in the film and television industry. As a screenwriter, I co-wrote Enchanted Christmas Cake, a Lifetime holiday TV movie, in 2021. Lots of projects, not enough time.
What organization / activity are you involved with or passionate about that people would find interesting?
For years, I have been a collector of antique jewellery, buttons, china and more. I picked up extra income at slow times in my career by setting up at antiques shows and wrote extensively about collectibles for local and international magazines. I wrote and hosted Scary Collections, a half hour TV show about Halloween collectibles. And, of course, my volunteer work for ACTRA has been rewarding, having served what seems like countless terms as Branch President, National Director, National Councillor and Member of the National Executive. My ACTRA Life Membership Award is so precious to me, telling me the often-challenging work has not been forgotten.
What Director would you like to work with?
I have already worked with Robert Altman. There are so many great women directors out there I would love to meet.
What is your favorite movie and/or TV show?
To Kill a Mockingbird, Enchanted April, and more. I watch a lot of British mysteries, old and new. I especially loved Anthony Horowitz’s Magpie Murders.
As a Performer, what is one thing you wish you would have known sooner?
Don’t listen to the voices that tell you what you should be or how you should act. Follow your instincts and don’t care what other people say. I wish I had known this earlier in my career. Nobody can give you confidence. It must come from within. I am grateful for the encouragement I received when I was starting out, but now get more inner satisfaction from writing.
