What has been your favorite role?
One of my favourite roles was playing Phil on the Netflix series Black Summer. He is an awful character and director John Hyams gave me such freedom to play and bring all I could to the scenes. I still have folks tell me that they didn’t realize it was me until halfway through the show.
What do you do when you are not performing?
When I’m not performing, I’m pursuing my master’s degree at the University of Calgary and working as a violence prevention leader in the community. I also create programs using the arts to engage men and boys in violence prevention. Plus, being the dad of two awesome little boys keeps me busy.
What organization / activity are you involved with or passionate about that people would find interesting?
The organization that is closest to my heart is the Centre for Sexuality, specifically its WiseGuyz Program. I was fortunate to be involved in developing and running this program, and the work these folks do to create safe spaces for young men to build healthy relationship skills is so needed in our world today. This organization does so much to foster equity and inclusion in Alberta and across the country.
What Director would you like to work with?
I would love to work with the director Taika Waititi. He is so innovative and funny, the worlds and characters he creates make you laugh and move you at the same time. It’s the best combination.
What is your favorite movie and/or TV show?
At the moment, my favourite TV shows are Ted Lasso and Squid Game. They are so different in tone, voice and performances and I love those extremes in my own work. When I get too disturbed and unsettled from Squid Game, I use Ted Lasso to cleanse my pallet.
As a Performer, what is one thing you wish you would have known sooner?
One thing I wish I knew earlier is that all of who I am matters. The fuller my life is outside of acting the more I bring to what I do as a performer. We need more diverse stories being told so we need to create space where people can bring all of who they are to what they do.
