What has been your favorite role?
We’re almost done with the production of a web-series I created called “Department of Paranormal Affairs,” directed by Michael Peterson, in which I play one of the leads, Scott Power. Perhaps it’s weird to say, because I wrote a lot of it along with Jessy Ardern, but it has definitely been my favourite role. While it might not be the largest production I’ve ever worked on, it’s certainly the largest role I’ve ever had, and it’s basically a sitcom with supernatural creatures, so it’s a world I love playing in.
What do you do when you are not performing?
I write, produce, and direct, as well, so when I’m not performing, I try to focus on bringing my own projects to the screen. I’ve got a short film called “CAPTCHA” playing at the Calgary Underground Film Festival this year, and the web-series I mentioned is almost finished production with Dept.9 Studios in Edmonton. But these days most of my downtime is spent with my wife and our five-month-old son – just playing with him, reading, going for walks – it’s the best.
What organization / activity are you involved with or passionate about that people would find interesting?
Right now, I’m a part of The Kinkonauts’ Conservatory Improv Class here in Calgary, which has been awesome. I did a lot of improvs when I was younger, and recently got back into it by teaching teenagers at Calgary Young People’s Theatre, but through The Kinkonauts I’ve gotten the chance to play regularly again and get back on stage. They also have what they call their Accelerator class, which is a drop-in class every Saturday that requires no experience, and it’s only $5 (probably the best deal for anything, anywhere!)
What Director would you like to work with?
My favourite directors are Edgar Wright, Christopher Nolan, and Greta Gerwig, so certainly any one of them would be at the top of my wish-list.
What is your favorite movie and/or TV show?
Picking one is so hard, but the movie that made me want to make movies was “The Matrix.” I watched the special features on the DVD so many times, and it just blew my mind what went into it and the deeper meaning behind the film. “Back to the Future” is another favourite, which I have watched countless times.
As a Performer, what is one thing you wish you would have known sooner?
I wish I knew more about what it is like actually being on set. The first film I was ever in, someone put a mark down for me when I wasn’t looking, but I had no idea what it was, so I literally picked it up and said, “hey did someone drop this?” Super embarrassing. Similarly, my first time on TV, the scene required another performer to push a luggage cart right behind me – and he ended up running into the back of my feet, and I said “oh, whoa, can we cut?” I wasn’t hurt or anything, I just thought it was enough to have messed up the shot, and again, unknowingly stepped out of my lane as an actor thinking I was being helpful!
