What has been your favorite role?
Over the course of my 43-year career, I have had the privilege of working on numerous exceptional projects. However, my most cherished role was playing Lula in “Children of the Dust” in 1994, collaborating with Sidney Poitier. This experience was truly remarkable. Sidney demonstrated the significance of clear communication with the director, which has proven invaluable throughout my career. I can say I worked with many incredible actor’s on that show. Another that was memorable, was in “21 Jump Street” the tv series, “Dreamkeeper” and “Into The West.”

What do you do when you are not performing?
When I’m not performing, I have been engaged in directing and producing a documentary about my father, Jimmy Bear, a prominent Cree Nation Snooker player, titled “Jimmy The Bear” since 2021. This undertaking has been an edifying experience, allowing me to gain insight into his life and his career. I am relishing the experience of directing, although it is a huge process ensuring that all facets are properly secured, cleared, and researched. A significant development occurred while working on this documentary: “The Billiards and Snooker Association” finally acknowledged my father’s outstanding achievements, which had previously been overlooked, and he received long-overdue recognition in the Snooker world. Both he and his brother, Johnny Bear, were inducted into the 2022 Canadian Snooker Hall of Fame. I am extremely proud that sharing his story brought my father the recognition he deserved.  I was able to document this momentous occasion as part of his story. We’re in Post Production. I will let ACTRA know and everyone when it will be coming out soon.

Moreover, I work in the film industry as a makeup artist and special effects technician. You have to be versatile in what you love.

What organization / activity are you involved with or passionate about that people would find interesting?
Today, the organization I am spending most time with is with the Sparrow ArtSpace Society as a board member. It has been a transformative experience, allowing me to tap into my creative potential and connect with like-minded individuals. Art and writing have long been my sanctuary, and this experience has helped me reinvigorate my passion for these pursuits. Sandra, the owner of Sparrow ArtSpace Gallery, has created a nurturing environment that fosters artistic growth and collaboration to artists all over. I’ve had the privilege of participating in workshops that celebrate diverse artistic talents.  I’ve witnessed the profound impact that art can have on individuals and all communities.

My ‘Art of Mother Nature Workshop’ on Mother’s Day was a powerful example of this, as participants crafted their own unique pieces using natural materials I collected myself for the art presentation. With Sandra’s guidance and support, I’ve regained my artistic footing in both art and filmmaking.  I’m now poised to share my ‘Art of Mother Nature’ workshops and indigenous teachings with the Calgary Board of Education Indigenous team, inspiring positive change through the universal language of art in the coming year.

What Director would you like to work with?
I would love to work with director and storyteller Alanis Obomsawin, she is an outstanding distinguished Indigenous filmmaker with a substantial amount of documentary work and films like “Kanehsatake: 270 Years Later” and “Incident at Restigouche. “ l would love to follow in her footsteps along with Sarah Polly,  Rae Farrow, Georgina Lightning, Sofia Coppola,  Kathryn Bigelow, Patty Jenkins, Tracey Deer Ron Howard and Spike Lee, Ang Lee and of course Steven Spielberg. Honestly, learning from all of them is just watching all their films.
